Social Networks:  Critical for Your Success

What one factor:

  • Affects your health as much as smoking, according to a leading health researcher,
  • Increases your chance of career promotions, according to Stanford University researchers;
  • Reduces effects of work stress, says the Centers for Disease Control;
  • Dictates your ability to get help after a natural disaster, according to our research, published in the top sociology journal;
  • Is essential for garnering critical entrepreneurship resources, as identified by the National Commission on Entrepreneurship;
  • Significantly affects your job satisfaction?

The strength of our social networks.

At Optinet Resources, we help our clients craft social networks to harness all of these benefits. We begin by assessing our clients' social networks. We then develop a plan to strengthen weaknesses of their social networks and guide their progress to help them create and maintain social networks that are optimal for them.

We provide these social network services individually, to business people and entrepreneurs. We also teach clients in companies and associations to develop their social networks, through online social network assessment and social network seminars.

We make sure your social network:

  • Provides resources to build your business or career: money, employees, expertise.
  • Offers you and your family practical assistance in the hectic day-to-day busy-ness of life - and in times of crisis.
  • Helps you secure your next job, client, sale.
  • Supports and mentors you, personally and professionally.

The New Model of Social Networks

Life has changed. In the 1950s, many families had one spouse to handle home life and one to handle work and provide the income; many had extended kin nearby. Social networks were large, rich, and diverse. To some extent, social networks "happened naturally".

But today? Our lives have changed - and so have our social networks. Dual-earner families are the norm, as more than 60% of American women are part of the paid labor force. The number of hours spent working, and commuting, has risen: Census data show that the number of Americans working 48 hours or more rose during the last 25 years. Companies continually ask us to "do more with less."

That means we need even more from our social networks than we did in the past. But we have less and less time to devote to building our social networks, less time to spend in the community organizations that help us build those networks.

And the effects on our social networks are evident. A recent national survey of Americans' social networks showed that fully one-quarter of Americans could cite no close personal confidantes or only one, nearly 50% could name two or fewer. Our social networks are in trouble.

But it doesn't have to be that way. We help our clients rebuild their social networks - and show them how to help rebuild their communities in the process.

Social Networks for What You Do and Who You Are

Unfortunately, most of us don't know how strong--or weak--our social networks are until it all hits the fan:  the sudden lay-off, the terminal diagnosis, the fire that destroys our home. That's when we find out what our social networks can do - or realize that they aren't up to the job.

Do we know whom to call to bring chicken soup, get another opinion, get help with insurance issues? Can we immediately shoot our resumes to a list of professionals who respect us and "know people who know people" in our industries? Do we have a place to crash for the night and a shoulder to cry on?

Don't wait for professional or personal disaster to hit: Use a scientific social network assessment to uncover potentially catastrophic weaknesses and discover under-utilized strengths of your current social network.

We'll provide a detailed analysis of what that means for you, your business or career, and your social network strategy. (Many of our clients tell us that before they've even seen the social network report, they're beginning to understand where the strengths and weaknesses in the business and personal sectors of their social networks lie - just by filling out the assessment.)
