Survey Research for Entrepreneurs
To develop your business effectively, you need information. You need to understand your markets, your customers, your suppliers - the list goes on and on. Surveys can provide tremendously effective tools for getting the information you need to plan and to develop your business, IF you know how to do surveys well.
And that's the tricky part--because it's just not as easy as it sounds.
Suppose you want to find out how satisfied your customers are with Program X. You ask them how satisfied they are, overall--and 67% say they're at least somewhat satisfied. So you decide that you'll leave the program as it is--after all, if it isn't broken, why fix it?
But what if there IS a problem? What if you just asked the wrong question? And research shows that you probably did: These kinds of "global satisfaction" questions almost always overestimate satisfaction.
If you had asked some more specific questions, you might have discovered that 47% of your customers think the price of the program is too high--that's almost 1 in 2. Or perhaps you would have determined that, although they like the program, 53% found customer service lacking.
The point is that you have to ask the RIGHT questions to get the information you need. Failing to do so can cost you customers or clients--and money.
We know how to ask the questions, because we've been doing surveys and teaching survey research for over two decades. We've conducted surveys that were funded by the National Science Foundation, the US Army Corps of Engineers, the Louisiana Office of Emergency Preparedness, and the Louisiana Department of Labor.
We can use that expertise and experience to help you:
- Measure customer satisfaction;
- Find out what kinds of new products your customers are looking for;
- Determine what resources your employees need, to perform their jobs more effectively;
- Measure the satisfaction of your employees to predict retention and turnover.
We can help you through every stage of the survey process: work with to isolate the most critical questions your business needs to answer and design a survey to answer those questions. Then, we can either administer the survey for you and analyze the data, or give you the tools you need to administer the survey yourself.
Here are some examples of surveys on which we've worked:
US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Tulsa District, Red River Chloride Control Recreation Study, Phase I.
USACE, New Orleans District, Amite River Structure Inventory.
USACE, New Orleans District, Westshore Structure Inventory.
USACE, Institute for Water Resources and Tulsa District, Inter-Agency Performance Evaluation Task Force (Post-Hurricane Katrina evaluation).
USACE, New Orleans District, Post-Flood Damage Survey.
USACE, Memphis District, Recreational Analysis for White River, Arkansas.
USACE, New Orleans District, Lower Atchafalaya Basin Recreation Study.
